Should we read more genre fiction?

I think that in school we are not reading enough genre fiction. We are only reading what the school and the government wants us to read, nothing that we actually want to read. If we added more genre fiction to the curriculum people could find a genre they like and start to read that, and with their new interest in that genre they have a new found interest in books. I'm sick of reading only Shakespeare, Hamlet, Gatsby, give me something that I actually want to read! I love thrillers and comedies, why can't i read those instead of Shakespeare, which I fall asleep reading. I understand that you can learn a lot from classic books like Shakespeare, some off the fundamentals that we have today come from that piece. But can't we learn those fundamentals from something a little bit more exciting: we can find a book that's in the same genre with the same fundamentals that's a thousand times better! Also I feel like I would learn more and be more engaged in discussions about the book if I actually liked it and read it, I don't want to talk about who had the biggest role in causing Romeo and Juliet's death when I didn't even like the book. I would however want to talk about Let Me off at the Top a comedic piece written by Ron Burgundy. In closing I think that we need to read more genre fiction in schools because it is something that we want to read rather than something we are forced to read.

  1. I agree that schools should include newer stories within curriculum. You can get the same effect from reading Hamlet as you could from a fresher perspective offered in a more recent story.
